Best AI Companion Apps in 2026: 8 Platforms Compared
Looking for an AI companion app that actually feels alive? The space has exploded since 2025 — but most "best AI girlfriend" lists are thin affiliate roundups that never mention what each app can't do. This guide compares eight platforms on the things that matter: conversation quality, image and video generation, character depth, pricing, and privacy.
Quick answer: if you want a companion who feels like a real person — with her own personality, photos, and videos — start with PopMaker (best overall for chat + images + video), Candy AI (polished roleplay), or FantasyGF (huge character gallery). Details and trade-offs below.

1. PopMaker — best all-round AI companion (chat, images and video)
Most AI companion apps do one thing well. PopMaker is built around all three:
- Companions with real depth. Every character has a defined age, occupation, backstory, speaking style, and consistent personality — not just a name and an avatar. Conversations stay in character across sessions.
- Your companion generates her own photos and videos. Chat naturally escalates to personalized images, and image-to-video generation brings your favorite character to life. The Discover feed also gives you a TikTok-style stream of character videos to browse for free.
- You can build your own. The character creator lets you define appearance, personality, and backstory, then the platform generates matching images and video.
- The Creation Studio. Upload any photo and apply one-click templates to generate custom AI images and videos — a feature most companion apps simply don't have (see the Studio).
Pricing is token-based: one balance covers chat, images, video, and unlocks, and every price is visible before you spend. All content is 100% AI-generated and the platform is strictly 18+.
Trade-off: newer than the incumbents, so the character gallery is still growing.
2. Candy AI — best for polished girlfriend roleplay
Candy is the most "productized" companion app: clean UI, curated female/male/anime characters, and detailed profiles (age, body type, interests, opening lines). Image galleries are among the richest per character, and premium unlocks extras.
Trade-off: video options are limited, and pricing pushes you toward a subscription.
3. FantasyGF — biggest character gallery
With 15+ images per character and dozens of personalities, FantasyGF is the place to browse until someone catches your eye. The character pages are genuinely well-crafted.
Trade-off: no video generation; the experience stops at chat + images.
4. DreamGF — simple and image-forward
DreamGF keeps things simple: pick a character, chat, enjoy images. If you want a low-friction app, it works.
Trade-off: small public gallery, occasional slowness, and depth is limited.
5. MyBabes — content-feed style
MyBabes blends companion chat with a community-style feed of AI images and videos — closer to a social network than a one-on-one companion.
Trade-off: weaker persona depth; chat is more transactional.
6–8. Nectar, CrushOn, Kupid
- Nectar AI focuses on customizing your companion's look.
- CrushOn leans into long-form story roleplay (login required to browse).
- Kupid plays as a dating-sim style matcher (login wall).
All three are functional but narrower than the top picks.
